5. Center-Seal, Back-Seal and Pillow Bags

A center-seal or back-seal bag usually has a longitudinal seam running down the back, plus cross seals at the top and bottom. When made on a vertical form-fill-seal machine, the film is formed around a tube and sealed as a continuous operation. “Pillow bag” commonly describes the soft, filled shape created by this construction.

Why Manufacturers Use Them

The format can be material-efficient and well suited to automated output. It is familiar in value-oriented, institutional and secondary packaging applications. With correct film and machine settings, the same production concept can support whole bean, ground, instant or portioned coffee products.

Fin Seal Versus Lap Seal

A fin seal joins the inside sealant surfaces together, producing a raised seam. A lap seal overlaps one film edge over another, so seal compatibility may require a structure designed to seal in the relevant surface-to-surface combination. The machine configuration and material structure must therefore be specified together; “back-seal bag” alone is not enough information.

Technical Considerations

Critical parameters include web width, repeat length, eye-mark position, print registration, unwind direction, coefficient of friction, forming-collar behavior, seal initiation, dwell time, pressure and cross-seal contamination. 6. Three-Side-Seal and Four-Side-Seal Pouches

Three-side-seal pouches are flat packs sealed on three edges and left open on the fourth for filling and final sealing. Four-side-seal sachets are sealed around all four edges after dosing, commonly from paired webs or suitable packaging machinery. Both formats are useful when compact dimensions, portion control and a broad flat print face matter more than a standing package.

Main Limitations

Flat sachets do not usually offer reclosure and may have limited room for storytelling. A consumer may perceive a difficult tear as a product-quality issue even when the coffee itself is sound. Opening tests should include users and real product, not only empty film samples.

7. Stick Packs, Drip Coffee Overwraps and Other Single-Serve Formats

Single-serve coffee packaging is not one bag type. It is a use case that can employ stick packs, sachets, pillow packs, filter-pack overwraps or capsule overwraps.

Stick Packs

Stick packs are narrow packs commonly used for instant coffee, soluble coffee blends, sugar or creamer. Their narrow geometry supports controlled pouring and compact cartons. Powder flow, dosing, narrow seal lanes and tear behavior must be validated because even small dimensional changes can affect the line.

Drip Coffee Filter Overwraps

Single-serve pour-over coffee normally combines an inner filter pack with a protective outer overwrap. The overwrap’s job is different from the filter’s job: it helps protect aroma and manage exposure until use, while the filter controls brewing. The outer pack may be a three-side-, four-side- or pillow-style sealed format depending on equipment.

Capsule and Pod Overwraps

Individual or multipack overwraps can provide additional protection, grouping or communication space. The need for an overwrap should be evaluated against the primary capsule system, target shelf life, channel and material-reduction goals. A degassing valve is not automatically relevant to these sealed single-serve systems.

Key Decision

For single-serve coffee, begin with the product delivery system and packing machine. The final shape is the output of those constraints. Selecting a visually attractive sachet without confirming dosing, web handling and seal geometry can create costly redesigns.

8. Rollstock for Automated Coffee Packaging

Rollstock is a supply format rather than a finished bag geometry. Printed or unprinted flexible film is delivered on a roll, then formed, filled and sealed on the coffee manufacturer’s equipment. Depending on the machine, rollstock can become pillow bags, stick packs, sachets, quad-style packs or other formats.

When Rollstock Makes Sense

Specialty Variants That Are Often Mistaken for Bag Types

Coffee Valve Bags

A coffee valve bag is any compatible bag format fitted with a one-way degassing valve. The valve is most relevant when freshly roasted whole beans or ground coffee continue to release gas after packing. It is not a substitute for barrier, sound seals or process control, and it is not automatically needed for instant coffee, drip overwraps or every roasted-coffee program.

Valve decisions should define product age at packing, expected degassing, valve type and location, packaging atmosphere, pack geometry, seal sequence and validation method. The filled pack should be checked for leakage, panel behavior and valve contamination under realistic transport and storage conditions.

Zipper Coffee Bags

A zipper is a consumer reclosure feature, not the original hermetic production seal. Most retail packs still need a heat seal above the zipper for initial integrity. Tin-Tie Coffee Bags

Foil and Metalized Coffee Bags

An aluminum-foil layer and a vacuum-metalized film are not the same construction. Barrier specifications should state the test method, units and conditioning. Oxygen transmission rate can be measured using methods such as ASTM D3985 or ISO 15105-2, but the number is meaningful only with test temperature, relative humidity, specimen condition and material thickness or structure. Water-vapor transmission should receive the same context.
